IAMVOCAL COMMISERATES WITH OUR PEOPLE IMPACTED BY THE FLOOD

Until a month ago, citizens of flood-prone areas in the Niger Delta of Nigeria existed normally. The flood was the first of its kind - higher and stronger than its 2012 predecessor. It saw its victims scamper to safety when there was next to none - as appropriate authorities had not prepared neither were the citizens equipped for the flood. Make-shift IDP camps and relief materials became the go-to means for survival.

While some slept, the waters overtook homes, knee-level for some, chest level for others. Travellers who had hope in crossing the East-west Road with Trailers were met with the impossibility of such trips in a few days as the Trailer drivers couldn’t trust the roads to carry them or their passengers.

Roads collapsed, people swept away, travellers trekked & boats became the preferred means - some livelihood for farmers who cannot access their farms.

In neighbouring states, schools have been shut for 6 weeks to wait out the flood. Children are at home bailing water whilst hoping and praying to God that it ebbs and safety is restored to the extent possible.

As a result, we are deeply saddened by the flood and its devastating impact on our neighbours and sister states.

We are however grateful to God that it has commenced ebbing, which promises some respite as our brothers and sisters can begin restoring their homes.

It is our hope and prayer that the resultant destruction be rectified soonest and its accompanying hardship, alleviated.

Consequently, in partnership with TEDxPortHarcourt for her 10th anniversary, we will support the affected through a verified NGO with 50% proceeds to affected areas within Rivers State from Support Ticket sales for the event.

May this avoidable mishap not befall us again.

With the most sincerest concern,

The Team
